Miss Rodeo Washington History

In 1963 a group of individuals took on the task of starting the Miss Rodeo Washington Pageant to be able to send a representative to the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. As they progressed through the tasks of developing the program they contacted the Othello Rodeo about hosting the pageant and they gladly accepted the opportunity.

The first Miss Rodeo Washington was chosen in September of 1963 and competed for Miss Rodeo America just a few months later. The Miss Rodeo Washington Pageant was held annually during the Othello Rodeo. In 1971 the directors made the decision to change the timing of how Miss Rodeo Washington was selected. During the 1971 pageant two women were chosen. The winner held the title for the duration of 1971 while the first runner up became Miss Rodeo Washington 1972 allowing each new Miss Rodeo Washington a few months to prepare for her year of reign rather than being crowned and going directly to the Miss Rodeo America Pageant.

In 1989 Penny Wooten spent numerous hours compiling the information needed to become a non-profit corporation which allows Miss Rodeo Washington Association the chance to offer its sponsors the opportunity for a charitable tax deduction.

The pageant has had several homes including the Moses Lake Roundup, Kitsap Co. Fair and Stampede, Yakima Rodeo, Horse Heaven Round Up and it’s current home at the World Famous Ellensburg Rodeo.

Each year the Miss Rodeo Washington Association along with the help of its generous sponsors and supporters have the opportunity to distribute scholarships and prizes to many young women throughout the State of Washington. Along with the prizes, young women have the chance to fulfill their dream of representing rodeo and Washington State while traveling some 40,000 miles each year. To culminate this great experience Miss Rodeo Washington has the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss Rodeo America, held prior to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.
